With the advent of technology and the Internet, the consumer has gained
a tremendous control over the home buying process. No longer totally
reliant on the real estate agent the buyer can now search through Multiple
Listing Service (MLS®) information as easily as clicking on MLS.ca
Real estate agents tend to look on the advent of Internet technology through the gloomy eyes of fear. The idea that buyers have access to nearly the same information agents and brokers have has struck fear into their hearts. Rather than embracing the enabling of the consumer to be an active and engaged member in the process of their own transaction, the majority of Calgary real estate agents have attempted to manipulate the access to public information through the use of forced registration information.
The tighter associates have held on to property information, the louder the cry of INDEPENDENCE from the public! The Internet is now the consumer's vehicle of choice for mls searches for two reasons; speed and autonomy. Buyers don't want to give their name, they want MLS® information on their schedule, and they want it NOW.
Agents are in the way. Unfortunately they have become their own worst enemy. Yet we seem to be on the brink of a shift in the way real estate transactions are handled. It is an unpaved path to a true revolution. It's one that we have come to embrace.
